A likely explanation is that SpamAssassin tries to expire its Bayes database, but is unable to finish this task within the 5 minute SMTP timeout of your provider's server (=client side). It would help to see the complete log of one failed session.

There are some things that you should do:

- upgrade to the latest release 1 version of NoSpamToday!. Among other things, diagnostics and error messages have been improved. Download this release here:

http://www.nospamtoday.com/download/nst1/nospamtoday.exe

- with this version, you will get a batch file named "expire.bat", located in the installation directory. Run this batch file once manually (it may take several minutes). Consider using the task scheduler to run this regularly.

If this does not help, please send us some additional log file excerpts to nstsupport@byteplant.com

The newest release of NoSpamToday! SMTP Proxy 2.0 has database maintenance support integrated in its GUI, so please consider upgrading.

Hi,

As you told us, we upgraded our NST1 to the latest version. We increased the smtptimeout setting of our smtp server to 5 minutes.
All these have not solve our problem.
What we can notice is that sometimes, the QUIT command doesn't appear and the session is hold until the server close it by a time out.

Here is a good transaction followed by a transaction without the QUIT command :

This all looks as if everything is working as it should. It is not your server's timeout that causes the problem, it is just that smtp01av.ntr.oleane.net fails to transmit the mail. It is their problem.

The whole transfer looks as if smtp01av.ntr.oleane.net is trying to send bogus non-delivery reports, probably because a worm mail was using one of your addresses as the sender address.

If you are flooded by non-delivery reports (and it looks a lot like you are), it will help to enable the traffic limiting settings of NoSpamToday!.
Please read this document for more info:

http://www.byteplant.com/support/nospamtoday/howtohandlenondelivery.html

If I remember correctly you need to edit the nospamtoday.cf file in version 1 to enable traffic limiting. In version 2 the traffic limiting options can be set in the SMTP proxy port setup wizard.
